Niche-market crop protection company Engage Agro has signed on to distribute an Ontario manufacturer’s biodegradable soil covering.

Advanced Micro Polymers, based west of Toronto at Milton, Ont., has granted the Guelph firm exclusive North American marketing and distribution for products it will sell in Canada under the name “EcoFilm – Liquid Mulch.”

EcoFilm Liquid Mulch products are a blend of biodegradable polymers from agricultural produce with recycled paper fibres, spread on fields in liquid form.

AMP said its mulch product forms a film on the soil surface allowing water and liquid fertilizers to penetrate into the soil, but preventing certain weed seeds from taking root. EcoFilm helps maintain soil moisture and increases soil stability, the distributor said in a release Tuesday.

CBOT weekly outlook: Soybeans/corn awaiting acreage data

Soybean and corn futures at the Chicago Board of Trade posted some large price swings during the week ended March 25, as market participants reacted to the shifting news out of the Middle East and adjusted positions ahead of upcoming acreage data from the United States Department of Agriculture.

“The liquid formulation of the EcoFilm Liquid Mulch products offer many of the same benefits as plastic mulch and bark mulch, but the liquid formulation gives it the flexibility to be used in a number of different application and production environments,” Engage business unit manager Sean Chiki said in the release.

Engage plans to develop markets for the EcoFilm products within its core specialty agricultural and horticultural markets, Chiki said.
