IntercontinentalExchange (ICE), the U.S. owner of Winnipeg’s electronic canola and barley commodity exchange, has launched a service to provide its market data in real time through applications for users of Apple’s iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.
The launch is part of ICE’s purchase Monday of TradeCapture OTC, a Connecticut-based company that deals in web services for commodity trading.
The TradeCapture service formerly known as Tap and Trade has now been dubbed ICE mobile and will be available online through Apple’s App Store. ICE said it plans to offer ICE mobile versions for Blackberry and Android devices “in the future.”

ICE mobile will give the company’s WebICE users real time market data, which they can access using their WebICE account ID. The service will be expanded later this year to offer mobile trading, Atlanta-based ICE said.
An ICE spokesman confirmed Monday that data from ICE Futures Canada, the former Winnipeg Commodity Exchange, will be available to ICE mobile users whose WebICE accounts include ICE Futures Canada access.
Where version 1.0 of the ICE mobile app enables WebICE users to view real time data on the iPhone, Touch or iPad, the next version will enable trading of ICE’s futures and OTC markets, including integration with the user’s WebICE account to provide the same services available from a desktop.
“We have quickly come to rely on the productivity, information and flexibility this application brings our trading operations,” Chris Mudry of Swiss-based energy trading firm Mercuria said in ICE’s release.
“The ability to view real-time prices, create customizable views and charting replicates the capabilities we have on our desktop. There’s not another mobile app like it for the commodity markets today.”
A free trial for WebICE users of ICE mobile is in place through the end of 2010, the company said. More information is available on ICE mobile’s website.
