Any farmers near flood-affected regions of Manitoba who are willing to take in cattle on a short- or long-term basis are asked to contact the province’s cattle producers’ organization.
Manitoba Beef Producers (MBP) on Friday called on “all producers, grain farmers, neighbours (and) Crown land leases,” who are willing and able to take cattle, to contact the MBP office “immediately.”
MBP said it’s also looking for names of “any volunteers that have experience working cattle.”

Cattle futures on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange were stronger on Friday, hitting fresh highs to end the week.
The Manitoba government on Tuesday declared a “livestock emergency,” during which time provincial ag department staff will work with conservation department staff to identify available Crown lands for additional use.
Said land will be used to house livestock and store machinery until floodwater recedes and the additional land is no longer needed, the province said.
Manitoba cattle producers finding themselves in a potential flood situation are asked to do the following, in this order:
- contact their rural municipality office;
- contact their local Manitoba Agriculture, Food and Rural Initiatives (MAFRI) office or MAFRI GO centre;
- contact the province’s disaster financial assistance (DFA) office to fill out assistance forms immediately; and
- contact MBP if they’re in need of available pasture land or cattle boarding, citing the number of head of cattle requiring evacuation. Producers must also “thoroughly document all activity and details of your situation,” MBP said.
“If you are a producer facing evacuation or other related emergency and in need of assistance, please call our office or visit our website to find out your necessary steps of action and how MBP can assist you further or direct you to the right resources,” the organization said.
