Nova Scotia’s government plans a $1.9 million round of direct payments to the province’s cattle producers.
The provincial agriculture department said in a release Wednesday that it will flow the funding directly to producers through its programs and business risk management division.
Details will be provided next week, the department said.
“The department identified short-term financial pressures facing our cattle industry,” Agriculture Minister Brooke Taylor said in the release. “We recognize that Nova Scotia cattle producers need a plan for their future and department staff are currently working with the Nova Scotia Cattle Producers to develop a long-term vision and strategy.”

For its part, the NSCP “is committed to working on the development of a solid strategic plan that we expect to have ready in June,” association president Greg Sheffer said in the province’s release.
The province also pledged support for the NSCP to follow through on priorities to be identified in the association’s plan. One priority is support for Atlantic Stockyards in Truro, the province said.
Taylor said the funding package, along with its investment in December of $2 million for the Atlantic Beef Products plant at Borden, “demonstrates our confidence in Nova Scotia’s beef sector.”
