Veterinarian Dr. Trevor Lloyd Jones, the first dean of the University of Guelph’s Ontario Veterinary College and previously Alberta’s first provincial animal pathologist, died Wednesday in Victoria at age 100.

Jones came to Canada from the U.K. in 1926, working at the U 5 Ranch at Edgewater, B.C. before deciding on a career in veterinary medicine.

Graduating from OVC at Guelph in 1934, Jones became an instructor in the university’s pathobiology department.

He then served as a captain in the Second World War, and later in Edmonton as Alberta’s first provincial animal pathologist.

Jones rejoined Guelph’s pathology department in 1946, then became OVC’s acting principal (1950-52), principal (1952-64) and first-ever dean (1964-68).

According to his obituary in the Guelph Mercury, Jones, who retired from OVC in 1974, was also involved with the World Health Organization and visited several countries as a consultant in veterinary education.

“Throughout your leadership at OVC, you were known for practicality, charm and idealism,” current OVC dean Elizabeth Stone wrote to him on his 100th birthday in March, quoted in a release Thursday from OVC.

“And your influence lives today in the students who learn at OVC, in the faculty who have been inspired by the innovations you implemented and the staff who are dedicated to the excellence of OVC.”

According to the Mercury, Jones’ family plans a private cremation and has declined flowers, asking that donations be made in his memory to Save The Children Canada.
