A string of warm and sunny days allowed Saskatchewan’s grain growers to take off 31 per cent of their crop over seven days ending Monday.
That brings the total 2010 harvest up to 60 per cent complete so far, the provincial ag ministry said in its report Thursday for the week of Sept. 28 to Oct. 4.
That’s well down from the five-year (2005-09) Saskatchewan average of 85 per cent combined for this time of year, the province said.
Another 30 per cent of the 2010 crop is now swathed or ready to straight-combine.
“The past couple of weeks of good weather (have) producers bringing in the crop as quickly as they can,” the ag ministry observed, but noted many fields are still “very wet,” making the job more difficult.
Saskatchewan’s northeast, where substantial acres were left unseeded this spring due to excess moisture, is now farthest ahead in harvesting what’s available, at 68 per cent, followed by the southwest at 66 per cent.
The province’s west-central and northwest regions are farthest behind, at 47 and 57 per cent complete respectively, the ministry said.
