U.S. livestock: Cattle rise, hogs recoup losses

Chicago live and feeder cattle futures rose on Tuesday while hog contracts regained Monday’s losses.

Most-active February live cattle futures closed at 230.700 cents a pound, up 0.150 cents. June live cattle settled up 0.275 cents at 223.700 cents per pound.

Most-traded January feeder cattle gained 3.400 cents to close at 343.325 cents a pound while March contracts closed at 337.600 cents per pound, up 2.750 cents.

Prices for green and yellow peas have dropped back across the Prairies over the last week. One of the major downward drivers was the Statistics Canada production report released earlier this month, said Levon Sargsyan of Johnston’s Grain in Calgary.

Wholesale choice boxed beef was valued at $359.46 per cwt in the USDA’s afternoon report, up $2.02 over Monday. Select beef gained $3.08 to close at $347.30 per cwt.

Most-active February lean hog futures closed at 84.775 cents a pound, a gain of 0.925 cents. April lean hogs gained 0.775 cents a pound to settle at 89.700 cents per pound.

The USDA reported pork carcass cutout value up $0.68 over Monday at $98.89 per cwt.

A rebound in weekly beef and pork export sales was supportive – particularly for cattle, Reuters reported on Monday. For the week ending November 20, beef sales totalled 17,200 metric tons for 2025, while pork sales were 44,900 metric tons for this year, according to USDA data.
