Grain company Viterra has bought the anhydrous ammonia terminal it was leasing from fertilizer firm Agrium at Vanscoy, Sask.

Viterra had been Calgary-based Agrium’s “principal tenant” at the Vanscoy site, about 25 km southwest of Saskatoon, since 2001.

Viterra had a lease buyout option on the facility and has opted toi exercise it, the Regina-headquartered grain firm said June 30.

The site purchase, for an undisclosed sum, includes an anhydrous ammonia tank with a capacity of 36,000 tonnes.

“Over the past five years Viterra has made significant investments to improve the operational capacity of its (anhydrous) network,” Doug Wonnacott, Viterra’s senior vice-president for agri-products, said in a release.

“We will continue to play a leadership role, investing in our retail and terminal sites to support the growth of (anhydrous use) on farms in Western Canada.”

The buyer noted it also works “closely” with industry associations on anhydrous ammonia training and safety programs for employees, farmers, suppliers and emergency responders.
