The name of Canada’s largest grain company will be the brand of Canada’s championship gymnastics event when it comes to Regina in May.

Viterra has signed on as the title sponsor for what will be called the 2012 Viterra Canadian Gymnastics Championships when held in Regina May 21-26.

Viterra CEO Mayo Schmidt described the sponsorship deal as “a natural fit for Viterra, given our position as a global supplier of healthy food ingredients that meet the nutritional needs of people around the world.”

The company’s employees, he said Thursday, “are committed to healthy lifestyles, with many of them involved in sport and fitness.”

Gymnastics Canada’s championship event is expected to bring over 1,100 athletes, coaches and officials to the city, with several of those athletes building toward appearing in the 2012 Olympics in London.

All four disciplines — women’s artistic gymnastics, men’s artistic gymnastics, tumbling and trampoline, and rhythmic gymnastics — will be included at the Regina event.

Gymnastics Saskatchewan CEO Klara Miller said in Viterra’s release that the provincial body’s management committee aims to recruit 800 volunteers to help manage the event.
