Canada’s biggest grain handler plans to boost storage capacity at its high-throughput elevator west of Edmonton by the end of this year.
Viterra announced Tuesday it would increase total storage capacity by 12,000 tonnes at its facility at Acheson, about 10 km west of the city, for a new capacity of 38,000 tonnes in all.
“The expansion will strengthen capacity while improving grain loading and reducing costs,” Bob Miller, the Regina-based firm’s senior vice-president of grain for North America, said in the company’s release.
The Acheson site is already capable of loading 100-car unit trains, the company said. The project is expected to offer “greater opportunities for farmers to move their grain and oilseeds from the farm to international markets.”
Construction is to begin this summer and is scheduled for completion in December, the company said.
