Global Markets: Bank of Canada raises interest rates

WINNIPEG, Jan. 17 (CNS Canada) – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

– The Bank of Canada raised its key overnight interest rate by 0.25 points on Wednesday, taking the rate to 1.25 per cent, its highest level since 2009.

– Bitcoin was down sharply again on Wednesday hitting US$10,000, or roughly half of the level seen at the peak in December. Concerns over increasing regulatory measures also weighed on other cryptocurrencies.

– United States President Donald Trump said he would release his awards for ‘fake news’ today, January 17. However, details of the possible event are unknown.
