  • United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken is in the Middle East on Tuesday in another attempt to restart ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Hamas. On his eleventh trip to the Middle East over the last year, Blinken will also discuss post-war plans for Gaza. Reports indicated that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu may hold off on any ceasefire agreement until a new U.S. president is sworn in.

  • A Reuters/Ipsos poll released on Tuesday found U.S. Vice-President Kamala Harris maintaining her three-point lead over former President Donald Trump in the run-up to the presidential election. The poll gave Harris 46 per cent support to 43 for Trump. However, on economic and immigration issues the poll said most voters favoured Trump over Harris. Election day is Nov. 5.

 

  • Statistics Canada reported on Tuesday that the Industrial Product Price Index (IPPI) fell 0.6 per cent from August to September, with a 0.9 per cent drop year over year. A 6.5 per cent drop in energy and petroleum products was responsible for the decline. StatCan noted that excluding those products the IPPI would have bumped up 0.2 per cent.

 

  • Susan Holt is set to become the next Premier of New Brunswick after she led the Liberals to winning 31 seats in Monday’s provincial election. Incumbent premier Blaine Higgs and his Progressive Conservatives scored 16 seats while David Coon and the Green Party won two. Meanwhile, recounts in the British Columbia election are to continue until the weekend.
