Global Markets: Canada’s economy grows one per cent in Q3

– Statistics Canada reported this morning Canada’s economy may have grown at an annual rate of one per cent in the third quarter. It also estimated that real gross domestic product was up by 0.3 per cent in September. StatCan explained that growth in services-producing industries in August were offset by declines in goods-producing industries. Shutdowns at Canadian National and Canadian Pacific Kansas City railways also contributed to a decline in transportation and warehousing. The Bank of Canada previously estimated 1.5 per cent growth in Q3.

– The United States Energy Information Administration reported the amount of Canadian oil imported by the U.S. rose to a record high of 4.3 million barrels per day in July. The completion of the Trans Mountain pipeline in May and a 115 per cent increase in oil imports by the U.S. West Coast since July 2023 accounted for the rise. More than half of all maritime oil exports from Western Canada went to the U.S. West Coast with the rest going to Asia, the report added.

– Russian forces used a glide bomb to attack a residential building in Kharkiv on Thursday, killing a 12-year-old boy and injuring at least 35 people. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy once again urged the U.S. to allow them to use their long-range missiles to attack Russian air bases. The U.S. government has only allowed Ukraine to attack near the border.

– North Korea test-fired an intercontinental ballistic missile on Thursday for the first time in nearly a year. Japan’s defence minister Gen Nakatani said the missile flew for 86 minutes at a maximum height of more than 7,000 kilometres, surpassing data from previous tests. There has been speculation Russia has provided North Korea with assistance to its nuclear program in exchange for providing soldiers in the war against Ukraine.
