– Statistics Canada reported on Tuesday the annual inflation rate declined to a three-year low of 2.7 per cent in April, compared to 2.9 per cent in March. Food prices also increased by less, rising by 1.4 per cent in April after going up by 1.9 per cent in March. However, gasoline prices jumped 6.1 per cent in April compared to 4.5 per cent in March. The Bank of Canada (BoC) will make its next key interest rate decision on June 5.

– Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, the country’s foreign minister Hossein Amirabdollahian and other officials were killed in a helicopter crash on Sunday in Iran’s mountainous northwest near the Azerbaijan border. Raisi and others were returning from the border after officially opening a dam along with Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev. Forty search teams were tasked with searching for the wreckage before the helicopter and those on board were discovered on Monday. Mohammad Mokhber, Iran’s senior vice-president, will be interim president while a new presidential election will be called within 50 days.
– One passenger was killed and 30 more were injured after a Singapore Airlines flight from London hit turbulence on Tuesday, forcing the plane to make an emergency landing in Bangkok. According to witnesses and available flight data, the plane seemed to tilt upward before making a sharp drop. Oxygen masks were also dropped during the flight. Singapore Airlines had not had a fatality on board one of its flights since 2000.
