Global Markets: Canada’s inflation rate eases off

– Statistics Canada reported Tuesday that the country’s inflation rate declined to 1.7 per cent in April, largely due to lower crude oil prices and by eliminating the consumer carbon tax. While gasoline prices dropped 18.1 per cent and natural gas prices fell 14.1 per cent in April, groceries were 3.8 per cent higher year-over-year. In March, the inflation rate was at 2.3 per cent.

– The Canadian Union of Postal Workers issued its strike notice on Monday, informing Canada Post that its members could on the picket lines by Friday. No new items would be accepted by Canada Post during the strike, except for social assistance cheques and live animals. Canada Post was on strike for 32 days in November and December 2024.

– A low-pressure system from the United States dropped up to 108 millimetres of rain to southeast Saskatchewan in less than 48 hours on May 15 and 16. Estevan received more than 70 mm, while Esterhazy and Maryfield saw 59 mm and 47 mm, respectively.

– A rainfall event in the northern parts of Buenos Aires province in Argentina triggered evacuations on Saturday and caused significant flooding in corn and soybean growing areas. So far, 730,000 hectares of soybeans in the province have yet to be harvested, according to the Buenos Aires Grain Exchange. The province already experienced heavy rains in March. Up to 400 millimetres of rain fell in recent days, with more rains to come this weekend. The exchange projected Argentina to harvest 50 million tonnes of soybeans.
