Global Markets: Canadian economy improves in July

StatCan projects August to hold at 0.2 per cent

  • Canada’s gross domestic product expanded by 0.2 per cent in July, according to Statistics Canada on Friday. StatCan reported growth in 13 of the 20 economic sectors it tracks, following 0.1 per cent growth in each of the previous two months. Retail trade led the way in July with an increase of one per cent. The report noted wildfires caused a 0.4 per cent contraction in the transportation and warehousing sector. The federal agency projected Canada’s GDP to remain at 0.2 per cent for August.

  • Helene slammed into Florida’s Big Bend as a Category 4 hurricane on Thursday, causing widespread destruction in the southeastern United States. So far, the deaths of five people have been attributed to Helene. Besides storm surges along Florida’s coast with the Gulf of Mexico, very heavy rains have struck 10 states that led to severe flooding. Helene is said to be the strongest hurricane to have hit the Big Bend and is one of the largest storms in the gulf over the last 100 years.

 

  • Shigeru Ishiba is set to become Japan’s next prime minister after winning the leadership of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party on Friday. It took a runoff with rival Sanae Takaichi for Ishiba to finally secure the win on his fifth attempt. The 67-year-old former defence chief will be sworn in on Tuesday, succeeding Fumio Kishida who resigned in August.

 

  • President Vladimir Putin raised the spectre of nuclear war during his televised address to the country’s security council on Friday. Putin threatened to launch a nuclear strike should Ukraine resort to using long-range missiles to strike targets deep inside Russia, if those missiles were supplied by or used in participation with another nuclear power, such as the U.S., the United Kingdom or France.
