Global Markets: Canadian retail sales up in July

– Statistics Canada (StatCan) reported on Friday that retail sales rose 0.9 per cent in July at C$66.4 billion. They were given a boost by new car sales, which increased by 2.3 per cent, as well as sales at motor vehicle and parts dealers, which were up by 2.2 per cent. Core retail sales, which exclude gas stations, fuel vendors and motor vehicle and parts dealers, rose 0.6 per cent in July. StatCan gave a preliminary estimate of a 0.5 per cent increase for retail sales in August. StatCan also gave a preliminary estimate of a 0.5 per cent increase for retail sales in August.

– The Israeli military said it carried out a targeted strike in Beirut earlier today, days after handheld electronic devices used by Hezbollah were remotely detonated in Lebanon, causing fatalities and thousands of injuries. Hezbollah struck northern Israel with 140 rockets on Friday, coming in three waves and targeting sites along the Israeli-Lebanese border. – Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau named Treasury Board president Anita Anand as the new minister of transport on Thursday, replacing Pablo Rodriguez who resigned from cabinet earlier this week to run for the Quebec Liberal Party leadership. Anand previously served as the minister of public services and procurement, as well as the minister of national defence. Rodriguez will sit as an independent MP for the rest of the Parliamentary session, saying he wanted to avoid a by-election months before a federal election.
