Global Markets: Canadian unemployment rate at 6.9 per cent

Glacier FarmMedia — The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

  • Now at 6.9 per cent, the Canadian unemployment rate dipped 0.2 percentage points in October, beating expectations as employment increased by 67,000, reported Statistics Canada. Employment growth was highest in men aged 25 to 54 (33,000 jobs) and youth 15 to 24 years old (21,000 jobs).
  • Travellers in the United States will be facing delays Friday, as the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) ordered nationwide flight cuts due to the ongoing government shutdown. Nearly 800 flights at 40 airports were cut from schedules, but that number was expected to grow as the ripple effect of the cancellations reaches other airports.
  • Conservative MP Matt Jeneroux announced he was resigning from the House of Commons on Thursday and leaving federal politics. Ahead of the announcement there had been some speculation that the Alberta politician was considering crossing the floor to join the Liberals as Nova Scotia MP Chris d’Entremont did earlier in the week.
