Global Markets: Canadian unemployment rate steady

  • Canada’s unemployment rate held steady at 6.9 per cent in July, reported Statistics Canada. However, employment dipped by 0.2 points at 60.7 per cent, with 41,000 fewer jobs reported.

 

  • Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin over the phone on Friday and “reaffirmed their commitment to further deepen the Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership between India and Russia,” said India’s foreign ministry in a statement. The conversation comes as the United States increases tariffs on Indian imports to 50 per cent over the country’s dealings with Russia.

 

  • Flash floods in China’s Gansu province have killed at least 10 people, with 33 still missing after heavy rains overnight, reports Chinese state media.

 

  • Soybean, corn and wheat futures in Chicago were posting small losses Friday morning, as Midwestern weather conditions remain relatively favourable. Canadian canola futures were also softer.
