- During a Tuesday phone call, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney told President Trump that the Gordie Howe International Bridge is a “great example of co-operation” between their countries. Trump threatened to refuse to open the C$4 billion bridge, claiming the U.S. hasn’t been treated fairly by Canada. Also, U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick reportedly met with the private owners of the Ambassador Bridge hours before Trump made his threat.

- Job creation in the U.S. increased by 130,000 positions in January, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported on Wednesday. That lowered the U.S. employment rate by 0.1 of a point at 4.3 per cent. Ahead of the report, analysts predicted 75,000 new jobs in January. Also, the bureau slashed its job growth total for 2025 to a net gain of 181,000 from 584,000.
- Inflation in China slowed to a 0.2 per cent increase in January compared to the previous January, the National Bureau of Statistics reported on Wednesday. That was half of the expected increase and is down from a 0.8 per cent increase in December. China’s core consumer price index, which excludes food and energy prices, rose 0.8 per cent January-to-January, and down from 1.2 per cent in December.
- Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will meet President Trump at the White House on Wednesday. The two leaders are to discuss U.S. tensions with Iran and the shaky ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. Trump ordered a second aircraft carrier to the Middle East and clashes between Israeli and Hamas forces continue.
