Global Markets: Dow flirts with 50,000 mark

  • The Dow Jones Industrial Average pushed above 50,000 points in early trading on Monday, before easing below that level. On Friday, the Dow added a whopping 1,206.95 points to end the day at a record high close of 50,115.67 points, peaking at 50,169.65 during the session. Large increases to tech valuations is said to be the reason for the sharp gains in the stock markets.

  • China has bought 264,000 tonnes of 2025/26 soybeans from the United States, the Department of Agriculture reported on Monday. It’s not clear at this time if the purchase is connected to President Donald Trump’s assertion that China is to acquire an additional eight million tonnes of U.S. soybeans on top of the 12 million reportedly bought already.
  • The USDA is set to release its monthly supply and demand estimates on Tuesday at 11 a.m. CST. Analysts projected U.S. soybean ending stocks for 2025/26 to slip to 348 million bushels. The carryover for corn is to be close to 2.22 billion bushels and that for wheat is to step back to 918 million bushels.
  • The bodies of three of the 10 kidnapped employees of Canadian mining company Vizsla Silver Corp have been identified, reports said on Monday. The employees were taken Jan. 23 from Vizsla’s operations in Mexico. Authorities said the kidnappings are connected to a ‘civil war’ within the Sinaloa drug cartel. The three were Jose Angel Hernandez Velez, Ignacio Aurelio Salazar Flores, and Jose Manuel Castaneda Hernandez.
