Global Markets: Hurricane Milton hits Florida

Glacier FarmMedia | MarketsFarm — The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

  • Hurricane Milton passed over Florida overnight, leaving at least three million households and business without power. The storm whipped up tornadoes, destroyed buildings and killed at least four people. The storm surge was not as expansive as early fears, but heavy rains may cause water levels to rise over the next few days, with much of the state also still dealing with the aftereffects of Hurricane Helene that hit in late-September.

  • Israeli forces have reportedly fired on positions used by United Nations peacekeepers in Lebanon, injuring two people and causing a watchtower to fall. “Any deliberate attack on peacekeepers is a grave violation of international humanitarian law,” the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFL) said in a statement.

  • The annual rate of inflation in the United States slowed to 2.4 per cent in September, from 2.5 per cent the previous month, according to a report from the U.S. Labor Department. That marked the smallest year-on-year rise since February 2021.
