Global Markets: Inflation climbs in December

  • Inflation in Canada during December bumped up to an annualized rate of 2.4 per cent, Statistics Canada reported on Monday. That’s a slight increase from 2.2 per cent in November and where analysts projected the consumer price index to remain. Higher food prices led to the overall uptick.
  • China reported on Monday that its birth rate fell to a record low in 2025 as its population continued to decline for a fourth-straight year. China said its birth rate dropped to 5.6 per 1,000 people, which brought its population down to 1.4 billion. An aging population and sluggish economy were cited as reasons for the decline.

  • Over the weekend, United States President Donald Trump threatened to slap a 10 per cent tariff on those countries opposing any U.S. takeover of Greenland. Trump said the surcharge is to take effect next month and would increase to 25 per cent there isn’t a deal by June. The European Union responded that it could impose retaliatory duties on the U.S.
  • President Trump announced on Sunday his Board of Peace that’s to oversee the reconstruction of Gaza. Reports said former Bulgarian foreign minister Nickolay Mladenov will be the board’s high representative and its executive committee is to be led by Trump loyalists. Included among the countries invited to join Trump’s board are Egypt, Jordan, Turkey, Russia, Belarus, Argentina, Hungary and Canada.
