- More than 2,000 people were reportedly buried in a massive landslide, according to Papua New Guinea National Disaster Centre on Monday. The landslide occurred three days ago in a remote region of the Enga province, and the centre stated the steep terrain has made it very difficult for rescue teams to reach the area. The centre also said the number of confirmed deaths has exceeded 670.

- Following a spate of tornado-spawning thunderstorms that swept across the United States Southern Plains during the Memorial Day weekend, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear declared a state of emergency on Monday. Reports said the twisters killed at least 14 people and destroyed hundreds of buildings. Seven people were killed by another tornado that cut through part of northern Texas on Saturday. U.S. weather forecasters warned today that storms are to strike the Ohio and Tennessee valleys bringing strong winds, hail, and tornadoes.
- For the first time in four years leaders from China, Japan and South Korea met to discuss trade and security issues. Chinese Premier Li Qiang and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida met with South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol in Seoul on Monday. At the top of the summit’s agenda was restarting talks for the three-party free trade agreement that had been stalled since 2019.
- Bloomberg News said on Monday that Canada is studying the new import tariffs the U.S. imposed on Chinese-made electric vehicles. Earlier this month, the Biden administration upped import tariffs on made-in-China EV’s to 100 per cent. The report said those EV’s are not a major factor in the Canadian market, but last year Tesla switched its EV’s sold in Canada from U.S. factories to Chinese factories.
