Global Markets: MacDonald seeks meeting with Rollins

– Heath MacDonald, Canada’s newly-appointed federal agricultural minister, said in an interview on Thursday his priorities were to resolve trade issues with the United States and China. He added he wants to meet with U.S. Agricultural Secretary Brooke Rollins as soon as possible, as well as with lawmakers and officials from states which benefit from cross-border trade. However, he reiterated Canada’s supply management system will not be a bargaining chip in potential negotiations.

–  The U.S. National Weather Service released its 90-day forecast on Thursday, showing elevated chances of above-normal temperatures throughout the entire country this summer. Below-normal rainfall is expected for the western U.S. Corn Belt and the Plains. In its drought outlook, much of the western U.S. will see persistent drought conditions.

– The Wheat Quality Tour in Kansas ended on Thursday, with the final hard red wheat yield estimate at 53 bushels per acre, the highest since 2021 and above the 50 bu./ac. projected by the U.S. Department of Agriculture earlier this month. Due to fewer projected acres, production was estimated to be 338.5 million bushels in Kansas, compared to USDA’s estimate of 345 million.

– Russia and Ukraine met for direct peace talks for the first time since 2022 on Friday, but the meeting lasted less than two hours because Russia introduced “unacceptable demands” to withdraw Ukrainian forces from large amounts of territory, according to a Ukrainian official. Before talks ended, both sides discussed a potential face-to-face meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin, as well as agreeing to exchange 1,000 prisoners of war each.
