  • Fighting in the Middle East intensified Wednesday, with reports of Israeli forces clashing with Hezbollah in Lebanon. The entire region is bracing for further escalation of the conflict, as Israel has vowed to retaliate for yesterday’s Iranian missile attack and the United States has reiterated its support for Israel.
  • The aftereffects of Hurricane Helene were still being felt in the southern U.S., with an estimated 1.3 million homes and businesses still without power across the Southeast and Midwest. The storm killed more than 160 people.

  • A strike by U.S. port workers continued for its second day Wednesday, causing ocean traffic to back up along the Eastern and Gulf coasts. President Joe Biden’s administration backed the labour action, calling on the employers to raise their offer to secure a deal. “Foreign ocean carriers have made record profits since the pandemic, when longshoremen put themselves at risk to keep ports open. It’s time those ocean carriers offered a strong and fair contract that reflects ILA workers’ contribution to our economy and to their record profits,” said Biden in a social media post late-Tuesday.
