Global Markets: Pakistan left in the dark

WINNIPEG, Jan. 23 – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

 

  • Millions of people in Pakistan were without power Monday after government efforts at saving energy backfired. Power had been cut during low-usage hours overnight, but then it would not turn back on in the daytime. Many major cities were left without power, including the capital Islamabad. Police were dispatched around the country to provide security.

 

  • The Chinese Lunar New Year began Sunday marking the Year of the Rabbit. The major holiday is celebrated across Asia, with the recent lifting of pandemic restrictions in China leading to a rush of travel as people visit family and mark the New Year.

 

  • Poland intends to send German-made Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine to help the embattled country in its conflict with Russia. Poland has asked Germany for permission to re-export the tanks but said they will go through with the plan with or without Berlin’s blessing.
