– Russian president Vladimir Putin has issued warnings over the increase in tensions between the United States and North Korea. He said it was mistake to pressure North Korea to give up its nuclear missile program. He said the region is now on the verge of a large-scale conflict and called for direct dialogue between the two sides.
– Rescuers in Houston, Texas, are continuing the search for survivors in areas still under water following Hurricane Harvey, which first hit the city a week ago, killing 44 people so far. Moody’s Analytics management firm has estimated damages including the broader economic costs from Hurricane Harvey to be US$51-US$70 billion.
– Customers at KFC restaurants in China will soon be able to use a “Smile to Pay” feature that uses a face recognition system to scan their faces at an ordering booth. Customers must then also enter their phone numbers.
