– Tens of thousands of residents across Ontario and Quebec were without power on Friday after severe thunderstorms passed through both provinces. At least 60,000 hydro customers in Eastern Canada were affected by 800 outages from Timmins, Ont. to the mouth of the St. Lawrence River in Quebec. One potential tornado was detected near Oskelaneo, Que., approximately 300 kilometres north of Montreal. All severe weather warnings and watches were lifted as of Friday morning.

– Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Friday it would end hostilities and enter peace talks if Ukraine abandoned its aspirations of joining NATO and withdrew its forces from four Russian-occupied areas. Mykhailo Podolyak, an aide to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, said the proposal was “not serious” and there was “no possibility to find compromise”. World leaders including Zelenskyy will attend a summit in Switzerland on Saturday and Sunday to discuss food security and nuclear safety in Ukraine. Zelenskyy and United States President Joe Biden signed a 10-year bilateral security agreement in Italy on Thursday.
– Tesla shareholders approved a US$56 billion pay package for CEO Elon Musk on Thursday, providing a vote of confidence despite lagging sales and Musk turning his focus to his other companies including SpaceX and X (formerly Twitter). The package received support from 77 per cent of votes cast at its annual shareholder meeting. A vote on the pay package in 2018 was voided by a Delaware judge last January. Shareholders also voted to move Tesla’s legal home from Austin, Tx. to Delaware.
