Global Markets: Tornadoes strike Iowa

– A tornado devastated the small town of Greenfield, Ia., located 90 kilometres southwest of Des Moines on Tuesday, causing multiple fatalities and injuring at least a dozen residents. Numerous tornadoes were reported elsewhere in Iowa, including one which took down wind turbines. Torrential rains, hail and high winds caused flash flooding in Omaha, Neb. on Tuesday as well.

– Russian forces have begun training in the use of non-strategic nuclear weapons, according to the country’s Defence Ministry. Russia cited “militant statements” from French President Emmanuel Macron and British Foreign Secretary David Cameron as reasons for the drills, which involve Iskander and Kinzhal missiles. These weapons are less powerful than strategic arms that can destroy cities.

– Norway, Ireland and Spain will formally recognize the Palestinian state on May 28, a historic yet symbolic move. Several European Union nations have indicated they may follow the lead of the three nations, arguing that a two-state solution is the best course to maintain peace in the region. Israel has since recalled its ambassadors from the three countries, but Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez told members of his country’s parliament that Palestine’s recognition is not anti-Israel.

– Quebecor CEO Pierre Karl Peladeau is asking the federal government to intervene in a potential deal between Loblaw and mobile phone retailer Glentel, jointly owned by Rogers Communications and BCE Inc. Loblaw’s supermarket kiosks The Mobile Shop currently sell phones from seven providers, but Loblaw decided to prematurely end Quebecor’s contract for wireless devices and services in those kiosks. Quebecor owns and operates discount telecom provider Freedom Mobile. The Mobile Shop replied that it only comprises of less than five per cent of mobile phone and plan sales in Canada and would not reduce competition.
