Global Markets: Trump alludes to restarting trade talks

  • United States President Donald Trump was coy when asked by the media on Sunday if trade talks with Canada would soon resume. Trump responded with “we’ll see,” adding that he and Prime Minister Mark Carney discussed trade on Friday at the FIFA World Cup draw. In October, Trump ordered the immediate halt to trade discussions with Canada, angry over a Government of Ontario ad featuring former President Ronald Reagan criticizing tariffs and extolling free trade.

  • At least one Thai soldier has been killed, along with four Cambodian civilians, as thousands of people flee border areas as tensions between the two countries heightened over the weekend. Thai forces launched air strikes against Cambodian targets on Monday in a disputed border area, as July’s ceasefire deal fades away. Cambodian officials claimed Thailand attacked first, while Thai officials said their attacks were in response to Cambodian artillery fire.
  • Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in London on Monday, in an effort to shore up support for Ukraine. The quartet are concerned that U.S. President Trump is pressing for an end to the Russian invasion of Ukraine that’s favourable to Russia. Russian President Vladimir Putin stated Russia will annex Ukraine’s Donbas region.
  • The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced a private sale for 132,000 tonnes of 2025/26 soybeans to China. Since the latter part of October, China has bought around 2.50 million tonnes of U.S. soybeans, but at this pace they are far behind the Trump administration’s assertion of them purchasing 12 million tonnes by the end of February. Earlier, the administration claimed the 12 million tonnes were to be bought by Jan. 1.
