– Donald Trump’s second impeachment trial gets underway in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday as the former United States president faces charges of inciting his followers to stage an insurrection and storm the country’s Capitol on Jan. 6. The trial is expected to begin with a debate over the constitutionality of trying a president no longer in office.

– Protests in Myanmar intensified as demonstrators took to the streets in outrage over last week’s military coup. The military reportedly used water cannons and fired rubber bullets in an effort to displace the crowds. The protests, now in their fourth day, defied a ban on gatherings imposed by the military after they seized power from the democratically elected government led by Aung San Suu Kyi last week.

– A World Health Organization team of experts investigating the COVID-19 pandemic have determined that it was “highly unlikely” that a leak in a laboratory was the source of the outbreak. The Wuhan Institute of Virology has been the centre of a number of conspiracy theories. Bats remain the most likely source, although the path to humans may have been more convoluted than earlier thought.
