– The United States Congress has officially confirmed Joe Biden as the country’s next president hours after a protest turned into a violent riot on Wednesday when supporters of outgoing President Donald Trump stormed the capitol. Four people died during the chaotic event, including one by gunshot. Trump is facing claims that he incited the violence, and had both his Twitter and Facebook accounts temporarily suspended for violating their rules.

– Japan has declared a state of emergency for one month for Tokyo and surrounding areas, as COVID-19 cases in the country surged to record levels.
– In Canada, Quebec will impose an overnight curfew for four weeks in an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19. The restrictions will see a curfew in place from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., with the exceptions for essential workers and dog walkers near their home. All non-essential workplaces, including gyms and restaurants, will close with only curbside pickup allowed. Places of worship will also be closed. Daycares and elementary schools remain open, with high school students going back to school in one week.
