– The United States Federal Reserve is expected to announce on Wednesday it will cut its key interest rates for the first time in four years. While most analysts believe there will be a rate cut, they are unsure whether it will be 25 basis points or a more drastic cut of 50 basis points. The Fed will make the announcement at 1 p.m. CDT with Fed chair Jerome Powell answering questions from the press half an hour later.

– Pagers used by members of Iran-based Hezbollah in Beirut were detonated en masse on Tuesday, killing 12 people and wounding nearly 3,000. Hezbollah fighters used pagers to evade tracking of their locations by Israel. The U.S. has denied involvement in the incident, while Taiwanese company Gold Apollo, whose brand name was on the pagers, denied making the devices saying they were made by Hungary’s BAC Consulting. Hezbollah said it will continue its strikes against Israel.
– Ukrainian drones struck a military depot in the Russian town of Toropets, 380 kilometres northwest of Moscow, overnight Wednesday. The attack was carried out by Ukraine’s Security Service as well as its Intelligence and Special Operations Forces. The depot housed Iskander and Tochka-U missiles, as well as bombs and artillery shells. Some residents were evacuated, but no casualties have been reported.
– Rogers Communications bought Bell Canada Enterprises out of its stake of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment (MLSE) for C$4.7 billion, Bell announced on Wednesday. Bell had owned 37.5 per cent of the company and the deal is expected to close in the middle of 2025. However, Bell secured content rights to the National Hockey League’s Toronto Maple Leafs and the National Basketball Association’s Toronto Raptors for the next 20 years. MLSE also owns Toronto FC of Major League Soccer, the Canadian Football League’s Toronto Argonauts, the American Hockey League’s Toronto Marlies, and Raptors 905 in the NBA G League.
