- In efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine war, the United States proposed a 15-year security guarantee to Ukraine on Sunday. U.S. President Donald Trump made the offer to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during their meeting at Trump’s Florida estate. However, Zelenskyy said he wants that commitment extended to 50 years as to further deter Russian aggression. Meanwhile, Ukraine’s Donbas region, largely occupied by Russia, remains a major stumbling block to a peace deal.

- A massive Chinese military exercise around Taiwan started on Monday in a demonstration of its ability to cut off the island nation from the rest of the world. Named Justice Mission 2025, the exercises included simulated land strikes, attacks on seaborne targets and blockade drills. Taiwan broke away from mainland China at the end of the Chinese Civil War in 1949.
- Statistics Canada reported on Dec. 24 that the November crush took in 1.02 million tonnes of canola, virtually the same as a year ago. Also, StatCan said total November grain deliveries were 5.62 million tonnes, up from 4.92 million a year ago. That included 1.62 million tonnes of canola, up nearly 11 per cent compared to the previous November.
- The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced a private sale of 100,000 tonnes of 2025/26 soybeans to Egypt. In the USDA’s effort to catch up on past export sales reports it will release another batch later today. Also, the department will issue its export inspections report this morning.
