Global Markets: U.S. seizes Venezuelan oil tanker

     – The United States Coast Guard confirmed on Sunday it was pursuing a sanctioned oil tanker in the Caribbean Sea as the Trump administration continued to target vessels connected to the Venezuelan government. On Saturday, the White House announced U.S. forces seized a tanker for the second time in two weeks, which is believed to be part of Venezuela’s shadow fleet and was sailing under the Panamanian flag. Last week, U.S. President Donald Trump said he would carry out a blockade of Venezuela.

     – Lt.-Gen. Fanil Sarvarov, head of the Operational Training Directorate of the Russian Armed Forces’ General Staff, was killed in Moscow on Monday morning after an explosive device was detonated underneath his car. Investigators believe Ukraine was behind the attack, which was the third of a senior Russian military officer in a year.

     – China’s Commerce Ministry announced on Monday it will impose provisional tariffs ranging from 21.9 per cent to 42.7 per cent on dairy products from the European Union. China said its investigation confirmed that EU dairy products were damaging China’s dairy industry. The EU previously imposed tariffs as high as 45.3 per cent on Chinese-made electric vehicles.

     – Canadian Pacific Kansas City railway exceeded its grain revenue cap of C$1.06 billion for 2025, the Canadian Transportation Agency said on Friday. CPKC surpassed the cap by C$2.66 million and will pay the excess plus a five per cent penalty to the Western Grains Research Foundation. Grain revenue caps are determined by volume-related composite price indices based on historical input costs. Canadian National Railway posted revenue of C$1.45 billion, just shy of its limit of C$1.46 billion.
