WINNIPEG, Jan. 4, 2018 (CNS) – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.
The unemployment rate in Canada remained at its 43-year-low for December, according to new data from Statistics Canada. The economy added 9,300 new jobs with unemployment at 5.6 per cent. Economists had predicted an addition of 5,500 jobs and an unemployment rate of 5.7 per cent.
Canada announced Thursday that 13 of its citizens have been detained in China since Huawei Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanzhou was arrested last month – before it was only publicly disclosed that three Canadians have been detained. The government has said at least eight of those 13 have since been released and there is still no explicit link between the arrest and the detentions.
