Global markets: US consumer spending gains

WINNIPEG, June 29 – The following is a glance at the news moving markets globally.

US CONSUMER SPENDING UP
US consumer spending gained in May, according to reports out of the country on Wednesday.

May marks the second consecutive month of increased consumer spending.

Market watchers say higher demand for automobiles and other goods contributed to the advances.

CANADA’S RAIL FREIGHT GAINS FROM YEAR-AGO LEVELS
The volume of rail freight carried in Canada totalled 28.3 million tonnes in April, a 7.2 per cent decrease from the same month last year. From April 2011 to April 2016, the total volume of rail freight carried in Canada increased 5.7 per cent, Statistics Canada said in a report on Wednesday.

CANADIAN AIR MOVEMENT TAKES FLIGHT
There were 490,045 aircraft take-offs and landings in April at the 91 Canadian airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers and flight service stations, compared with 461,210 movements in the same month the previous year, Statistics Canada said in a report on Wednesday.

Both itinerant movements (flights from one airport to another) and local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport) increased on a year-over-year basis in April. Itinerant movements were up 3.3 per cent to 331,874, while local movements rose 13.1 per cent to 158,171.
