The horse stabling industry in Alberta has been growing in recent years, with increased demand for stabling facilities and increased competition within the industry. A new fact sheet, Horses Boarding Stables in Alberta: An Economic Analysis 2009 has been prepared by Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development to bring together much needed economic benchmark information of value to new business ventures and established stable businesses.

The information included in this fact sheet is based on an economic analysis project conducted during the winter of 2008. The project, co-ordinated by Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development and the Horse Industry Association of Alberta, involved a volunteer group of stable owners. The case study groups included training stables, stabling-in enterprises, stabling-out enterprises and lessons enterprises.

Albertans interested in establishing a stable business and those already active in the industry or considering expanding their operation will find the economic information on expenses and profitability beneficial as they look to improve economic performance or gather information on the economics of the stabling industry.

The fact sheet is posted to Alberta Agriculture’s website and can be viewed and downloaded by visiting www.agriculture.alberta.ca/publications – under Free Publications, click on Livestock Production, then on Horses and Donkeys, and then on the fact sheet Horses Boarding Stables in Alberta: An Economic Analysis 2009.
