Alberta hemp variety commercialized

InnoTech Alberta has signed an agreement with an Ontario industrial hemp distributor for a hemp variety it has been developing over the past dozen years.

The subsidiary of provincial funding agency Alberta Innovates says Silesia “is ideal for Canadian growing conditions and offers the agriculture sector exceptional fibre production and seed-quantity compared to other cultivars.”

The fibres in hemp can be used in building materials and to replace wood fibre in pulp, paper and packaging production. The variety has better fibre quality and improved disease resistance, InnoTech said.

Beware giving horses too much iron

Horses consuming too much iron through diet or well water risk health problems like laminitis. Mineral testing forage and water is good practice for owners.

Silesia, to be sold by UniSeeds Inc., is an approved Health Canada cultivar and the distribution agreement commercializes InnoTech’s innovation with a royalty agreement.
