Charlie Arshad, University of Alberta adjunct professor in the Department of Renewable Resources, received the 2010 Soil Science Distinguished Service Award from the Soil Science Society of America at its recent annual meeting in Long Beach, California.

Arshad is only the second Canadian to win a prestigious soil science award since its inception in 1984. He was honoured for his distinguished contribution to the field of agronomy and soils for his work in conservation tillage development for cold regions, soil organic matter, liming and crop production, soil quality evaluation, termite-soil nutrient relationship and international agriculture.

Arshad worked primarily for Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada but also with the Canadian International Development Agency and the UN Environment Program in Nigeria and Kenya. He was named a Fellow of the American Society of Agronomy in 1997, the Canadian Society of Soil Science in 1998 and the Soil Science Society of America in 2000.
