Both beef and pork experienced significant gains in early 2014, but while pork prices have more or less levelled off, beef continues to increase monthly.
Beef prices are expected to remain high because of tight supplies but “the big question is whether consumer demand will hold,” said provincial livestock market analyst Jason Wood. The Canadian consumer price index for beef has increased by more than 28 per cent between January 2014 and April 2015.
“One very good point for the market is that Canadian and U.S. beef demand is robust relative to price levels,” said Wood. “Current prices would suggest lower consumption levels but that simply is not the case.”
