OYF looking for excellence in agriculture

Nominations are now open for the Alberta/NWT region of Canada’s Outstanding Young Farmers’ Program 2011.

Celebrating its 32nd year, Canada’s Outstanding Young Farmers’ Program is an annual competition to recognize farmers who exemplify excellence in their profession and promote the tremendous contribution of agriculture, and rural Canada. Demonstrating leadership in the agriculture industry, nominees are judged according to the following criteria:

Progress made in their agriculture career.

A group of cattle from Nait's Fairview Campus settle into their new home at Lakeland College in Vermilion. Lakeland bought the 23 cow/calf pairs from Fairview College. The angus herd originated in Vermilion, moved to Olds then moved to Fairview's new school of agrculture in the late 1940s where the herd has been ever since. After almost 70 years the descendents of the original herd returned back to Vermilion.

High prices, lower demand challenges producers

Large capital investments coupled with consumer demand makes for long-term planning among Canadian cattle producers

Environmental and safety practices.

Crop and livestock production history.

Financial and management practices.

Contributions to the well-being of their community, province, nation.

Nominees may be an individual, couple or managing partner/shareholder of a farm group. To qualify, the nominee must derive a minimum of two-thirds of their gross revenue from farming and not have reached the age of 40 as of Jan. 1 in the year of competition.

The Alberta/NWT regional event for Canada’s Outstanding Young Farmers’ Program will be hosted at Olds, Alberta on March 16 and 17, 2011.

One farmer or farming couple will be selected to represent the Alberta/ NWT region at the National Awards Program, to be held in Brandon, Manitoba November 14-20, 2011.
