Province wants input on Alberta’s water management system

The Government of Alberta is seeking Albertans’ thoughts on water availability management through surveys, open houses and other engagement events.

According to a recent media release, the government is asking for residents’ opinions on the province’s water management system and how it can be improved to ensure sustainable water availability.

“Population growth, economic growth, and water variability are challenging the water management system in Alberta,” read the release.

“New or updated policy and regulatory tools could be used to increase water availability for Albertans and optimize the water management system to better address these issues while continuing to protect the aquatic environment.”

Two surveys are available at alberta.ca/water-availability-engagement until January 10, 2025. One is a detailed survey for those with prior knowledge of Alberta’s water management system. The other is a brief, general survey for Albertans to share their thoughts on water availability.

The site also includes a section where participants can use “virtual post-it-notes” to share their ideas with other Albertans.

Some ideas might include ways to increase water availability in the province; policies, programs and approaches that are working effectively and others that need to be strengthened; and technologies or innovations that could help improve water availability.

A series of online and in-person events will be held across the province with Environment and Protected Areas staff on hand to answer questions and hear perspectives. Residents are also encouraged to attend regional opening houses. Days, times and locations include:

  • November 18 at 6:30 p.m.: Northern Alberta virtual public open house.
  • November 21 at 5:30 p.m.: In-person open house, Peace River.
  • November 26 at 6:30 p.m.: Southern Alberta virtual public open house.
  • November 28 at 5:30 p.m.: In-person open house, Lethbridge.
  • December 3 at 5:30 p.m.: In-person open house, Red Deer.

Organizations and communities can also request a meeting with government staff to share perspectives and information and to ask questions. For more information, email [email protected]. Written feedback and questions can be sent to the same address.
