About 2,000 hogs were lost in a March 31 fire which destroyed five of eight barns in a production complex northeast of Taber. About 1,000 animals in the remaining barns escaped, said an RCMP spokesman. The Taber fire department assisted by crews from Grassy Lake battled the blaze for 10 hours. Several firefighters were treated for smoke inhalation on the scene and one firefighter was transported to hospital and released shortly after. Investigation into the cause is ongoing. Eyewitness reports indicated the fire originated in the attic near a mechanical room. Damages are estimated at $1.3 million for the five buildings and the livestock.Garrett Simmons photo
