Men’s mental health advocate says sharing personal stories and communicating crucial to mental health

Former professional hockey player says awareness and support for men’s mental health is improving, but there is still a long way to go.

“It’s pretty stressful to move out and start university and this scholarship has really helped ease some of my worries about how I would be able to survive university financially,” said Nelson. “Most of all, I am grateful for the opportunities that have arisen because of this scholarship. Next summer instead of simply focusing on trying to make enough money to pay for another year of school, I am hoping to go on a humanitarian trip to help people in developing countries as well as gain new experiences to help prepare me for the years to come.”

The 2020 edition of the scholarship will start taking applications on May 1. The application form can be found at 4h.ab.ca.
