WINNIPEG, Sept. 6 (CNS Canada) – Lentil stocks have grown by more than five times the 2016 levels, according to data released today by Statistics Canada.
A report on grains and oilseeds stocks based on data up to July of this year, show 405,000 tonnes of lentils at the end of July this year compared to 73,000 tonnes in July 2016. The increase in credited to higher production in 2016.
Dry pea stocks showed an increase of almost 73 per cent with 174,000 tonnes on July 31 last year compared to 301,000 tonnes for July 2017.
The United States Department of Agriculture reports a surge in seeded acreage of chickpeas and lentils. American farmers seeded 603,000 acres this year, an increase of 86 per cent from a year ago. Lentils have reached a record 1.02 million acres this year, USDA stated. Farmers appear to be getting those acres by turning away from wheat, with 45.7 million acres planted, the smallest acreage since 1919.
The USDA pea and lentil market news reports slow trade activity with good demand, adding it was too early to estimate yields on the incoming crop.
