The United States Dry Bean Council has reported that important bean-growing areas in Mexico have not started seeding due to dry conditions. Zacatecas, the largest bean-growing state is driest and growers there have not started seeding at all. Chihuahua has received small amounts of rain and seeding has begun. In Durango, some light showers have fallen, but growers there are holding off for more moisture before they start seeding.
A survey of the Argentine bean crop predicts production will increase this year, said the U.S. Dry Bean Council. Growers have seeded more following strong demand from Brazil last year, especially for black, cranberry and dark red kidney beans. However, white mould may limit yields in some regions following heavy rain in late May in the northern growing region where most white, cranberry, dark and light kidney beans are grown. Still, overall yields are expected to be higher than 2016. In the key black bean growing region in the south, the U.S. Bean Council survey projected a 14 per cent increase in production compared to a year ago. That should help fill demand from Brazil, where the year’s second black bean harvest was damaged by rain.
