July 20 (CNS Canada) – Dry beans in Ontario are starting to flower and growers were out in fields scouting for signs of mould. Some growers reported finding western bean cutworm in traps, prompting the need for additional monitoring.

In Manitoba, warmer temperatures have advanced dry bean growth with many bean-growing areas receiving at least some rain. Bean fields are flowering with fungicide applications starting to get underway.

The Michigan dry bean crop continues to struggle with only 32 per cent of the crop rated good to excellent. Timely rains helped development.

Minnesota dry bean growers received some rain but more is needed. About 78 per cent of the crop is rated good to excellent.

In North Dakota, severe drought continues to degrade crop quality, despite rain earlier this week. Fifty-four per cent of the crop is rated good to excellent with 35 per cent blooming, compared to 67 per cent last year at the same time.
