Sept. 1 (CNS Canada) – Producers on the Prairies and in Ontario are expected to bring in more dry beans this year than in 2016.
In Ontario, producers are expected to harvest 123,800 tonnes of all types of beans, compared to 94,400 tonnes a year ago. That breaks down into 68,000 tonnes of dry white beans (48,800 in 2016) and 55,900 in dry coloured beans (45,600 a year ago), according to Statistics Canada’s latest production estimates.
On the Prairies, farmers are expected to produce 181,700 tonnes of dry beans, 27,200 in white and 154,600 in coloured beans, compared to 134,600 of all kinds in 2016.

Statistics Canada estimates that prairie farmers will bring harvest 75,000 tonnes of chickpeas this year, compared to 75,200 a year ago. All of that production is in Saskatchewan, according to the StatsCan data.
Prairie lentil production is estimated at 2.290 million tonnes (3.248 in 2016), with Saskatchewan responsible for 2.039 million tonnes of that. Alberta production is estimated at 251,300 tonnes.
For Prairie pea production, farmers will harvest 3.729 million tonnes of peas this autumn compared to 4.782 in 2016, according to StatsCan. Alberta production leads the way at 1.904 million tonnes, Saskatchewan grew 1.759 million tonnes and Manitoba grew 65,300 tonnes.
